What are chrome cobalt dentures?

What are chrome cobalt dentures?

Chrome cobalt dentures are removable prosthetic devices that are constructed from a light, durable metal to replace missing teeth and give the appearance of a full smile. If you are missing teeth, for whatever reason, and would like to fill out the gaps in your smile, chrome dentures are an effective and natural-looking alternative.

With the exception of some of the metal framework casting, our dentures are made right here in our clinic from premium-grade materials.

We design your dentures, so they are comfortable and easy to remove when needed. The metal frame helps the dentures clasp onto any existing teeth to stay in place making it easier to eat, speak and smile. When designed correctly, your chrome dentures will fit snugly around your teeth without any pain or uncomfortable pressure.

When you work with the team at Tweed Coast Denture Studio, you will have a wide range of options, from the type of materials used to the shape and colour of the teeth. We’ll ensure your new denture seamlessly blends into your existing smile.

If you’re not sure whether a chrome denture is the best fit for you, we’ll discuss the best treatment option for you during your initial appointment with us.

Aftercare & Troubleshooting Chrome Denture Problems

Why get chrome dentures?

Chrome dentures have more advantages over their acrylic counterparts. They are:

Why get chrome dentures
Are metal dentures suitable for everyone?

Are metal dentures suitable for everyone?

Despite their benefits, chrome dentures are not well-suited for everyone. They can be more expensive than acrylic dentures and can take a little longer to adjust to them.

It’s also difficult to add extra teeth to a chrome denture. If it’s likely that you will need more teeth extracted in the short to medium term, chrome dentures are likely not going to be the best option for you.

We can help you determine the best option for your situation in our initial appointment. You’ll meet with our principal dental prosthetist, Karl Eisermann, who can offer you professional and personalised advice when it comes to selecting the best type of dentures.

Is it easy to adjust to chrome dentures?

If you have become used to a different material or flexible dentures, you may notice it can take a little longer to adjust to metal dentures as they can feel more rigid in your mouth. However, you may also notice that your new denture feels thinner and lighter, so your mouth may not feel as crowded compared with an acrylic denture.

All in all, it is a personal experience that very much depends on your tooth structure and whether you’ve adjusted to previous metal dentures or not.

Once you pass the initial discomfort of a new denture (usually in a week or two), your denture should feel completely comfortable without any rubbing or digging into your soft tissue. If you feel pain at any time, we’ll adjust your denture for a more comfortable fit.

We won’t stop until we get it right and you’re happy with the final look and feel!

Frequently Asked Questions

The choice between acrylic or chrome dentures depends on your needs and budget. Chrome dentures are more expensive than other types. However, they are also more rigid, stronger and lighter. They can also clip onto existing teeth more securely while also covering less of the roof of your mouth.

Chrome dentures are also sometimes clinically necessary depending on the patient and it’s worth noting that for some patients it is the most worthwhile and cost-effective solution.

If you would also prefer to retain a sense of food and beverage temperatures, metal dentures have a high thermal conductivity and are a better option than acrylic.

Most dentures last a long time with proper care and regular checks with your dental prosthetist. If you choose an acrylic denture, you can expect it to last an average of 5 to 7 years. Whereas a chrome cobalt denture typically lasts much longer. Research indicates a chrome cobalt denture can last between 5 to 10 years.

In either case, your denture should be relined every couple of years so you can maintain a good fit.

Contrary to popular belief, chrome dentures do not damage your existing teeth or gums when fitted correctly and with proper oral care.

It is critical to ensure you have the optimal fit between your dentures and the surrounding mouth tissue and teeth. Thankfully, chrome dentures are known for having a more accurate fit than other types of dentures. This means it’s less likely for food particles to get stuck and cause bacterial buildup, which can damage your natural teeth. Additionally, chrome dentures are non-porous, making them easier to clean and reducing the likelihood of bacteria.

It’s also important that you implement good oral hygiene and pay special attention to the teeth next to your denture. By doing so, your teeth will not experience any damage from your denture.

Yes, more teeth can be added to a chrome denture at any time. At Tweed Coast Denture Studio, we offer a same-day denture addition service that covers most people’s needs. If your situation is more complex, we will let you know in advance if we need a little more time to perfect your new tooth addition.
